Non-formal labour policy soon: Minister
Labour and Employment Minister Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said the government is working for formulating a labour policy for informal workers, including domestic helps.
“We are working on it and will able to finalise the policy soon with provision of minimum wage for domestic helps,” he told a workshop at Cirdap auditorium in the city.
National Coordination Committee for Workers Education (NCCWE) and ILO jointly organised the workshop titled “Organise the non-organised workers in non-formal sector.”
The minister said the government has already requested to ILO for holding a convention on informal workers to help formulate a policy for them.
He said his ministry is preparing draft of the policy with an extra care as many children workers are being involved in informal sector.
The minister also emphasised forming trade union at all sectors for ensuring workers' rights as well as maintaining a good and peaceful relation between owners and workers.
Mosharraf also said the government is giving diplomatic efforts to rescue the missing Bangladeshi citizens in Afghanistan.
The minister also said the government has put its all kinds of endeavor to return the hijacked Bangladeshi ocean ship and its sailors from the hands of pirates.
“We are maintaining highest caution in negotiation with the pirates considering the safety of our sailors,” he said.
Labour and Employment Secretary Nurul Huq and ILO Country Director Andr Bogui spoke as special guests at the event. NCCWE Chairman Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar presided over the session while its member secretary Dr Wazedul Islam gave welcome speech. General Secretary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal Zafrul Hasan presented the keynote paper.
