JNU journos protest attack

Jagannath University (JNU) Correspondents' Association yesterday held a silent procession and rally on the campus protesting Tuesday's attack on university correspondents at the association's office and ransacking of it. Mohiuddin Ahmed, president of JNU Correspondents' Association, from the rally at university Shaheed Minar, said Kotwali police chief Salahuddin Khan made the attack on the journalists in a planned way and demanded punishment to the police men responsible for the incident. The association submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhaka district at 3:30pm. The university authorities have formed an 11-member enquiry committee to probe the incident, said Kazi Asaduzzaman, the proctor. The authority also had suspended all the regular classes and examinations for the next two days, he added. The administrative office, however, will remain open to continue the admission procedure. Following the Tuesday's attack, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) JNU unit committee had been dissolved, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, president of BCL central committee told The Daily Star last night. JNU sources said three groups of BCL comprising 20 to 30 workers each staged show down on the campus from 11:00am to 1:00pm yesterday. Sources said the show down was aimed at capturing good position in the new committee. Jahangirnagar University Journalists' Association and Rajshahi University Journalists' Association in separate statements yesterday condemned the incidents at JNU. Police Tuesday night arrested three activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir JNU unit on suspicion that they were involved in sabotage after infiltrating into BCL.
