Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the government wants to work with people of all faiths for the overall development of the country. She said like her party Awami League, the present grand alliance government also ensured religious harmony in the country. The prime minister (PM) made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of Bangladesh Christian Association at the Prime Minister' s Office (PMO). Hasina said Bangladesh is a land of religious harmony, which is the spirit of liberation war and her government ensured an environment of performing religious rituals of all people freely and peacefully. She said her government wants to engage the people of all faiths in the development activities of the country. She said her government for the first time established Christian Welfare Trust last year and increased its fund from Tk 1 crore to Tk 5 crore this year. Referring to demands of the Christian Association, she asked the well to do section of the community to raise funds for the welfare trust and ensure its proper utilisation. Hasina assured the Christian community that necessary food and clothes will be provided to the poor Christians on the eve of Christmas. “I'm not in favour of providing any special facility to a particular community, because all the time we provide assistance to those who need help,” she said. In this regard, she said the present government came to power to serve the people, not to make personal gains. “We are here to raise the socio-economic status of the country keeping the interests of the people in mind.” Hasina said an ambassador from the Christian community will be appointed. State Minister for Religious Affairs Advocate Shahjahan Miah and State Minister for Cultural Affairs Advocate Promod Mankin also spoke on the occasion. Later, the Prime Minister cut the cake to mark the Christmas Day.
