Over 500 Launch Accidents in Haor Area
Call to frame river transport guideline
Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) at a human chain yesterday demanded formulation of a river transportation guideline for haor areas to reduce launch or trawler accidents in the region.
Over 500 launch accidents in the haor area happened in the last 11 years due to lack of control over speed of cargo boat, launch, and trawler, said the speakers at the programme organised by Poba in front of the National Press Club.
Some 1,500 people have been killed and wealth worth crores of taka damaged for the accidents, they added.
They also noted that many of over 10,000 launches, cargo boats, and trawlers plying in the haors of northeastern Bangladesh are driven by unskilled people.
Moreover, there is a weak river transportation act and lack of proper monitoring system.
They also demanded the government make a coordinated development programme for the haor areas and make functional the haor development board.
Poba Chairman Abu Naser Khan and Nirapod Sharak Chai Vice President Khirod Ray attended the human chain among others.
