Condemned convict denied bail
A Dhaka court yesterday sent 'Mobile' Kader, a death-sentenced convict in the killing of leading entrepreneur Abdul Kader in October 2001, to jail after his surrender and bail plea in the case.
Judge (in charge) Kaniz Akhter Nasrina Khanam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 rejected the bail petition and directed the authorities concerned to issue a conviction warrant against the convict.
The entrepreneur who came from Dogachhi village in Srinagar, Munshiganj was killed in the city's commercial heart on October 17, 2001.
The same tribunal on January 19, 2004 sentenced seven people including 'Mobile' Kader to death and four, including a former Jatiya Party (JP) lawmaker, to life in jail over the killing.
'Mobile' Kader was sentenced in absentia, but the High Court (HC) on November 25, 2007 acquitted him of the murder charge.
Later victim's family filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the legality of the HC judgment.
Meantime, Judge Shamsunnahar Begum of the tribunal granted bail to 'Mobile' Kader after his surrender on August 8 this year. Victim's family filed another petition with the Appellate Division challenging the legality of the bail order granted by the tribunal.
