12 projects worth Tk 2795cr approved

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday approved 12 development projects involving Tk 2,795 crore, including three projects for the railway sector involving Tk 1,283 crore. With Ecnec chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, the approval was given at its meeting held at the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. “Of the total project cost of Tk 2,795 crore, Tk 1,784 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 982 crore as project assistance while Tk 29 crore from the Japan Debt Cancellation Fund (JDCF),” said Planning Minister AK Khandker while briefing reporters after the meeting. Planning Division Secretary Monzur Hossain was present. The approved projects include procurement of 170 MG BFCT and 11 brake vans for Bangladesh Railway with Tk 97 crore including Tk 66 crore under Indian $1 billion line of credit, and procurement of 264 MG coaches and 2 BG inspection cars for Railway with Tk 983 crore including Tk 688 crore also under Indian credit. The other railway project approved in the meeting is rehabilitation of Sholoshahar-Dohazari and Fateyabad-Nazirhat railway sections with Tk 203 crore. The other approved projects included construction of BTV headquarters (Tk 38 crore) and infrastructure development project in 19 important pourasavas (Tk 452 crore). The Ecnec meeting also approved water supply project in 37 district towns with Tk 424 crore. The Ecnec meeting sources said that the prime minister has directed the concerned authorities to improve the communication system of Sandwip with Chittagong and other parts of the country as well as to take necessary steps to protect it from erosion. The other projects approved in the meeting are procurement of rescue vessel 1st revised (Tk 357 crore), construction of Charfashion-Charmanika-Baburhat launchghat road (Tk 50 crore), three old bridges reconstruction project with approach road under the remaining part of Shaheed Buddhijibi Setu (3rd Buriganga Bridge) (Tk 73 crore), project for further development of Islamic University (Tk 32 crore), procurement of modern equipment and facilities for Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) (Tk 33 crore) and creating physical facilities in five divisional cities to prevent repression on women (Tk 53 crore). Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Planning Minister AK Khandker, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Labour and Employment Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, Home Minister Adv Sahara Khatun, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad and Advisers to the Prime Minister, among others, attended the meeting.
