HR Commission chief for fair trial of jawans
BDR jawans held in Khagrachhari District Jail have complained about being denied justice and it is ominous if a person is deprived of a fair trial, said Professor Mizanur Rahman, chairman of National Human Rights Commission.
It will have alarming consequences for future if fairness in Pilkhana mutiny trial is not ensured, he said.
Mizanur Rahman was addressing a press briefing after visiting the jail and also district hospital and Shishu Sadan yesterday noon.
The district jail is overcrowded and prisoners are kept in inhuman conditions, Mizanur Rahman said adding that the situation worsens in summer.
He also pointed a finger at the authorities of Khagrachhari Shishu Sadan, a government childcare home where he found kids toiling away cooking.
The HR watchdog chief urged the government to recruit cooks after creating posts at each of its branch and stop child labour as early as possible.
He also requested the government to appoint doctors to vacant posts to ensure health services for hill people, he said.
