Call to strengthen local government
Autonomous local government system should be strengthened to create awareness on human rights at grassroots level said speakers at Lokomorcha Conference and Sushason Mela in Barisal on Thursday.
Governance Coalition, which includes Integrated Community Development Association, Association of Voluntary Action for Social Development, Chandrawip Development Society and Bangladesh Village Development Centre, and district Lokomorcha organised the programme.
More than 250 delegates from nine union parishads under Barisal district participated in the conference.
Chaired by Lokomorcha President Dr Syed Habibur Rahman, it was also addressed by lawmaker Talukdar Md Yunus, Governance Coalition Central Representative Nazrul Islam, Jebunnessa Begum, Jibon Krishna Dey, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, Anwar Zahid and children, women and human rights activists.
Speakers said an elected government has to ensure good governance to protect the fundamental, socio-political, and religious rights, which is a core prerequisite to develop Bangladesh.
