Protect rights of minorities
Speakers urge govt
Justice Gholam Rabbani yesterday urged the government to withdraw the bill of the Vested Property Return (amendment) Act '2010 that was placed in the parliament on December 7.
“The proposed bill will not protect the rights of minorities. Rather it will violate their human rights. So the government should withdraw the bill immediately,” he said.
In the chair, Rabbani made the call at a seminar titled Vested Property Return (amendment) Act '10: Citizens' Concern.
Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD), Arpito Sompotti Ain Protirodh Andolon, Nijera Kori, and Sommilito Samajik Andolon jointly organised it at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the city.
He also demanded formulation of a new draft of the bill in light of the seven-point demand of the Hindu-Buddha Oikkyo Parishad.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haque Inu stressed the need for forming parliamentary caucus to protect the rights of minority communities.
Gonoforum presidium member Pankaj Bhattacharjee suggested mounting a tough movement to press the government to take necessary steps to resolve the years-long problem.
Arpito Sompotti Ain Protirodh Andolon General Secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury and Nijera Kori Coordinator Khushi Kabir, among others, also spoke at the function.
