BDR mutiny designed to oust govt: Tajul
The state minister for liberation war affairs yesterday said BDR mutiny was orchestrated to induce class-conflict among the military and paramilitary forces of the country.
“The mutiny could spread among the military force. But the government played skillful role and became successful to quell the attempt,” said Capt (retd) ABM Tajul Islam.
The state minister said the ultimate aim of a vested quarter was ouster of the government from power. Tajul Islam was addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club in the city.
He also criticised BNP leader Moudud Ahmed's remark that the name of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), formerly Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), will be changed again.
Tajul Islam said, “He is such a politician who changes parties over time. I know he wants to re-establish it as East Pakistan Regiment.”
The speakers lauded the government's role in pacifying the BDR mutiny that happened on February 25-26, 2009. The revolt claimed 74 lives including lives of 57 army officials.
The discussion was organised by Bangladesh Enterprise for Development and Securities Studies (BADS).
Joyonta Achyra, convener of BADS, and Shafiqul Bahar Majumdar, joint secretary general of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, also addressed the programme.
