A Judicial Magistrate Court in Kushtia yesterday sent a police Sub Inspector (SI) to jail in an extortion case. The accused is Kabir Hossain of Sadar police station. According to court sources, SI Kabir on February 1 last year called hardware shop owner Mokarram Hossain of Ailchara village in Sadar upazila to a house in the housing estate in Kushtia town, saying that he wanted to sell some motor parts. But the SI demanded Tk 50,000 from the trader and threatened to implicate him in a false case for non-compliance. Then, the SI with a help of one Faruk Hossain forced the businessman to pose for a photo with an alleged gay girl. They also realized from Mokarram Tk 2000 and snatched a mobile phone. The incident took place at about 2:30 pm on the day. The businessman went to Sadar police station and narrated the incidents to the then officer-in-charge (OC) Ahsan Habib. The OC after investigation found the allegations correct and asked the businessman to a file case against the Sub Inspector. Later, in a good gesture, Mokarram agreed to sit for an arbitration, initiated by a colleague of SI Kabir. The SI sought apology and returned the photo, money and cell phone taken from Mokaram. Again, on November 1 last year, SI Kabir went to Mokarram's house and demanded Tk 1 lakh, threatening him with a false case. After the incident, Mokkarrram filed an extortion case with a magistrate court on November 10. The district police administration suspended the SI. Yesterday, the SI went to appear before court. After a long hearing and examining documents, the Chief Judicial Magistrate sent him to jail.
