HC stays Ariful's trial for 3 months
A High Court Division Bench yesterday stayed for three months the ongoing trial in the tax evasion case against detained Sylhet city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Md Abdul Gafur kept the trial proceedings suspended till January 10 as the defence lawyers through an application informed him about the High Court's stay order.
Additional assistant commissioner of taxes, Sylhet, Abdur Rahman filed the case against Ariful under Special Powers Act on November 6 of 2007 through the public prosecutor for evading taxes amounting Tk 37 lakh during 2002-2003 and 2005-2006 tax years.
A close aide to former finance minister M Saifur Rahman, Ariful is one of the 50 corruption suspects in the ACC's first list.
Ariful, who has been detained since his surrender to the joint forces on February 25 last year, also faces trial in two other cases for extortion.
