Ashique Chowdhury, cousin of Harris Chowdhury, former political secretary of ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia was sent to jail after his surrender before a court here yesterday. Ashique appeared before the court after absconding for about a year and prayed for interim bail, but Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Sylhet Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan rejected his prayer and ordered to send him to jail. Ashique, former chairman of Kanaighat Upazila Parishad (UP) and former administrator of Kanaighat Pourashava was absconding after filing of a case filed against him along with his brother and others by Azir Uddin of Kandla village in Kanaighat on April 13 last year. In the allegation, he alleged that armed goons jointly led by Harris, Ashique, UP chairmen Ahmed Soleman and Mamunur Rashid vandalised and grabbed his shops, house and other establishments at Purba Lobhachhara on August 26, 2006. They grabbed the establishments in name of establishing an institution, 'Mulagul Haris Chowdhury Academy'. At that time, Azir could not file any case against them as the accused were in power, he claimed.
