Removal of shipping dept DG demanded

Staff Correspondent
Some NGOs yesterday demanded removal of the director general (DG) of Department of Shipping for his alleged involvement in different irregularities. Terming the existing DG incapable and unskilled, they also demanded appointment of an expert marine engineer as DG for the development of the entire riverine sector. They placed the demands at a press conference organised by National Committee for Protection of Shipping (NCPS) at Mukti Bhaban in the city. Reading out a written statement, NCPS Member Secretary Asis Kumar Dey alleged that some officials including the DG are trying to hand over water vessel survey activities to the private sector for personal gains. Talking to The Daily Star last evening, DG Rear Admiral (retd) Bazlur Rahman said, "My contract expires at the end of this month. An ill-motivated section is spreading propaganda against me so that the ministry does not renew my contract."
