Demo staged protesting removal of Prof Yunus

Around 100 people staged a demonstration in the port city yesterday, protesting the government's recent decision to remove Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus from the post of managing director of Grameen Bank. The demonstrators under the banner of Chittagong Development Movement formed a human chain in front of Chittagong Press Club. Speakers urged the government not to take any decision that might harass Nobel Laureate Dr Yunus, founder of micro-credit and Grameen Bank. Dr Yunus is an internationally renowned person who has branded Bangladesh to foreigners. Humiliating him is to humiliate the whole nation, they added. They demanded immediate cancellation of the decision and reinstating Dr Yunus with due honour. BNP lawmaker Zafarul Islam Chowdhury; former lawmakers Sarwar Jamal Nijam and Rosy Kabir; Advocate Shamsuddin Ahmed Mirza and Chittagong University Prof ANM Munir Ahmed were present. Prof Nasrul Quadir; BNP Chittagong city unit Secretary Dr Shahdat Hossain; Principal Rawshan Akhter Hanif; paternal uncle of Dr Yunus Advocate SM Sobhan and Journalist Eskandar Ali attended the function.
