Speakers at a seminar stressed the need for eradicating poverty from the family level to end child labour and ensure their social protection. They told a seminar titled Social Protection and Childhood Vulnerability jointly organised by Save the Children Sweden-Denmark and Save the Children Finland at Cirdap Auditorium on Sunday to discuss the effectiveness of different safety net programmes and its impact on reducing poverty and childhood vulnerability. "Eliminating child labour needs focusing the total household, not the child only," said Economist Kazi Kholiquzzaman adding that that implementation of the budget timely and long term activities are also important. Social Welfare Minister Enamul Hoque Mostafa Shahid, Dr Abul Barakat, professor of the Economics department of Dhaka University, Birgit Lundbak, country director of Save the Children Sweden Denmark, Disa Sjoblom, regional representative of Save the Children Finland, Rose-Anne Papavero of Unicef also spoke the seminar. They also said child labour is directly linked with education. The reason behind 35 percent drop out rate before completing primary education happens due to earning money for their families. They stressed the need for coordinated effort to eliminate child labour along with increased resources and increased coverage under the social safety net programme.
