Road crashes kill 5

Five people were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Rajshahi and Satkhira yesterday. Staff correspondent from Rajshahi report: Four people including a schoolboy and a teacher were killed and six others injured as a bus hit a shallow-engine driven human hauler from behind on Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway at Godagari upazila around 11:30am yesterday. The deceased are identified as Tashiqul Islam, 12, a class six student of Pirijpur High School of the upazila, Jahanara Begum, 40, Rabeya Khatun, 65, and Mamtaj Begum, 55, a teacher of the same school who succumbed to her injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). The others injured were admitted to RMCH and local health complex. After the accident agitating locals vandalised some buses and blockaded the highway. Police seized the bus but the driver and helper fled away. Our correspondent from Satkhira adds: A bicycle rider was killed in a road accident on Satkhira-Kaliganj road at Shakhipur intersection in Debhata upazila yesterday. The deceased was Samsur Rahman Sardar, 45, of village Paikara of Kaliganj. Police said the accident took place when a power tiller trolley hit the bicycle rider from behind leaving him injured seriously. He was declared dead at Debhata Upazila Health complex.
