Four cases lodged

Dhaka University (DU) authority and police filed four separate cases yesterday over the death of the university student Redwanul Islam on Saturday and the students' vandalism protesting the death on Sunday. DU's Chief Security Officer Kamrul Ahsan last night filed two separate cases, one with Motijheel Police Station accusing the transport workers of Himalaya Paribahan on charge of beating the students on Sunday night and the truck driver who ran over Redwan, 25, a post-graduate student of Arabic department, in the same incident. The authority yesterday filed another case with Shahbagh Police Station accusing 45 unnamed students on charge of ransacking DU proctor's office and different other rooms of the university in Sunday's protest following the death of Redwan. Redwan was crushed under truck wheels after being beaten by the transport workers following a clash between the students and workers on Saturday night at the city's Motijheel. Enraged at the death of Redwan, the university students went berserk and vandalised around a hundred vehicles and ransacked DU proctor's office and different other rooms of the university during Sunday's protest. Meanwhile, Shahbagh police yesterday noon filed two separate cases against students in connection with vandalising cars and attacking on police. Police said they filed a case on charge of vandalising vehicles at Shahbagh intersection and adjacent roads accusing ten students and other 140 unnamed students. The accused in the case are Mohammad Rahmat Ullah, Mohammad Shahabuddin, Mohammad Mominur Rahman, Mohammd Saifur Rahman, Mohammad Saifur Rahman, Hannan Sharif, Abu Zafor, Mohammad Mostakim Billah, Mohammad Mamun, Mahbubor Rahman, and Wazer Hossain Monir. Among the accused, police showed arrest Rahmat Ullah, a third year student of Islamic Studies department, who was detained during the vandalism on Sunday protesting Redwan's death. Accused Wazer and Zafor suffered injuries as the transport workers beat them up on Saturday. The other case was filed on charge of attacking police in Nilkhet area on that day in which 140 unnamed students were accused. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, Rezaul Karim, and OC of Motijheel Police Station, Tofazzal Hossain, confirmed the filing of cases. Meanwhile, AF Rahman Hall students formed a human chain yesterday at Aparajeyo Bangla demanding trial of the culprits (transport workers) immediately.
