Withdraw case against Prof Serajul Islam

A total of 104 teachers of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday demanded withdrawal of the case against DU's Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Chowdhury, which was filed in connection with the January 31 violence in Munshiganj over Arial Beel. In a statement they said, "We feel sorry for the January 31 violence over the construction of a new airport in Arial Beel. But we are shocked at the lodging of case against Prof Serajul Islam." "We learned that he was not at all involved in this, and it is not possible for him to be involved." "Professional identity, father's name, and age of Prof Serajul Islam were not mentioned in the case statement. We condemn the act and demand immediate withdrawal of the case," said the DU teachers. The signatories of the statement include Dr Md Nurul Islam; Dr Md Anwar Hossain, president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA); Dr Shahid Akter Hossain, general secretary of DUTA; Dr Yusuf Ali Mollah, dean of biological science faculty; Dr Ahmed Ismail Mostafa, dean of science faculty; Dr Nasrin Ahmad, dean of engineering and technology faculty; Emdadul Haque Md Matlub Ali, dean of earth and environmental science faculty; and Dr Syed Manjurul Islam, dean of fine arts faculty.
