No to random tax exemption: Hasina
The government will not entertain tax exemption indiscriminately in the future and will motivate eligible taxpayers to pay their due taxes.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina said this when a delegation of Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) led by BIA Chairman Sheikh Kabir Hossain called on her at the prime minister's office (PMO) yesterday.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the PM asked all to change tax evasion mentality for the betterment of the country's people.
“All the eligible have to pay taxes. How will the government run development activities without adequate money?” she questioned.
The PM said some people often opted for tax exemption, but such exemption will not be allowed to continue.
In this connection, she said that many renowned persons of the country have a wrong perception that there is nothing wrong in evading taxes. “This is not an ideal perception.”
Hasina said her government is working to strengthen social safety net and actively considering introduction of health and agriculture insurance.
BIA members greeted the PM for the development works being carried out by her government and expressed their readiness to provide necessary support to this end.
They also apprised the PM of their needs and problems.
