Road link snapped as bridge collapses

Our Correspondent, Narail
Road communication between Jessore and Narail and some other districts remains disrupted since Thursday as a 48-metre long bridge on Sitarampur Canal at Narail-Jessore Highway in Narail sadar upazila collapsed. Declared unfit two years ago for vehicles carrying a load of more than five tonnes, the bridge collapsed when an overloaded ten-wheeler truck carrying stone boarded it around 6:30pm. The driver and his helper managed to escape unhurt. People are now crossing the canal using a makeshift bamboo bridge. Shafiqul Isalm, executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department, Narail, said the broken part would be reconstructed for temporary use and a tender to build a new bridge will be urgently floated.
