40 Students Get Fantasy Kingdom Scholarship
Education with healthy entertainment stressed

It was an unforgettable day for schoolboy Azizur Rahman yesterday when he was honoured for his brilliant result and enjoyed the thrill of amusement park rides and captivating entertainment in a cultural programme. "I am speechless. This is the first time I received any award and passed such a wonderful day with my peers," said Azizur, a class IX student of Engineering University High School of the city, after receiving a scholarship. Like Azizur, 39 other meritorious students from 10 city schools received scholarships for their outstanding academic performance at a programme titled “Fantasy Kingdom-Concord School Scholarship Programme 2010”. The programme was organised by Concord Entertainment Company Ltd, a concern of Concord Group, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, on Fantasy Park premises in Ashulia. The schools are Agrani School and College; Azimpur Girls School and College; Dhanmondi Government Girls High School; Engineering University High School; Government Laboratory High School; Ideal School and College; Motijheel Model High School and College; Shiddeshwari Girls High School; and Viqarunnisa Noon School of Azimpur and Shiddeshwari branches. The students were also treated with all the rides of the theme park and Heritage Park. Guardians, teachers, and renowned personalities attended the programme where the students rendered songs and dances, recited poetry and staged drama. "This reward is inspiring me to do something good in the coming days. I will try my best," Azizur, who obtained GPA-5 in Junior Certificate Examination (JSC) 2010, told The Daily Star. Tazrin Sultana Ankhi, a class-six student of Ideal School and College, echoed Azizur. "I'm extremely delighted to get the scholarship and had a really fun time." The scholarships were given in two categories for brilliant result in the primary terminal and JSC examinations and to meritorious students of the schools. Winners in the first category each received a cheque of Tk 25,000 while those in second category got Tk 20,000. They all received a crest and a certificate. Awarding the scholarships, Concord Group Chairman SM Kamal Uddin said improvement in education and a flourishing culture are the preconditions to a country's development. He also said the vast population living below the poverty line has many talents. "Many of these talents drop out due to lack of proper educational plan and patronisation," he said, adding that it is imperative to ensure quality education in a healthy entertainment to develop Bangladesh. "I believe a good citizen can be made by providing the next generation with proper education and healthy entertainment," he said, stressing on the need for integrated efforts of all. Future leaders need the support to develop their intellect, said Shahriar Kamal, deputy managing director of the group, adding that the main aim of the programme is to ensure that none stops education due to lack of patronisation. The Daily Star Editor and Publisher Mahfuz Anam, Concord Group Managing Director SK Lala, Dhaka Universtiy Prof Dr Shoumitra Shekhor, sculptor Ferdousi Priyabhashini, artist Bulbul Mohalanobish and Radio Today Managing Director Rafiqul Haque also spoke.
