Don't make ACC paper tiger
Speakers urge govt
Speakers at a rally yesterday protested the proposed amendment to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Act 2009, saying it would leave the institution without power.
They said the changes in the act would also rob the ACC of its impartial and independent characteristics and thus become a barrier to ensure equal rights of all citizens.
The amendment will require the commission to obtain permission of the government before investigating corruption and irregularity of the state officials caused by mistake.
"It will make the ACC dependent on the government, and ACC's jurisdiction will be reduced and freedom will be curtailed," they said, demanding that the amendment be immediately revised by taking public opinion.
Marking the anti-corruption week (March 26 to April 1), the programme was arranged by Barisal district unit Durniti Protirodh Committee in association with Conscious Citizen Committee (CCC), and other NGOs in front of Aswani Kumar Hall in Barisal city.
Capt (retd) Sirajul Islam, district president of DPC chaired the rally addressed by leaders from different socio-cultural, professional, human rights, and non-government organisations of the city.
