DU VC gets Spanish award

Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique yesterday received prestigious Commander of the Spanish Order of Civil Merit for his contribution in enhancement of civil virtues in society. Spanish Ambassador in Dhaka Arturo Perez Martinez on behalf of Spanish King Juan Carlos handed over the certificate and a medal of the award to Prof Arefin at a function at the VC's bungalow on DU campus. Receiving the award, Prof Arefin dedicated the award to the empowerment of women and gender equality in Bangladesh and across the globe. “Woman empowerment and gender equality issue is very important for the overall development of a state,” the DU VC told the audience at the ceremony. Teachers, students and officials of DU and schools and college inside the campus were present while students of Department of Music sang Bangla and Spanish songs. Criticising quarters opposing the government declared women development policy, Prof Arefin said, “They (those opposing) are illogically opposing the policy.” Ambassador Arturo Perez Martinez said Prof Arefin is an educationalist, human rights activist and campaigner of free flow of information, and his speeches and writings are always inspiring. The award is given to nationals of Spain and foreign nationals for enrichment of civil virtues in society and contribution for extraordinary benefits of Spain.
