Anti-women fanatics terrifying people
Says Sultana Kamal
Former adviser to a caretaker government, Sultana Kamal, yesterday said fundamentalists are terrifying people to impose their opinion against the women development policy.
"Their (the fanatics) statements about the policy contain no logic, they are just frightening people using the Quran, guns, and sticks and talking about the hell."
She also said, "There is nothing to care about them (fundamentalists). They are not courageous because they are doing injustice."
"They don't hold also the right to impose any Fatwa, as there is a constitution and a judicial system in Bangladesh".
Sultana, also a noted human rights activist, made the views while addressing a discussion at the auditorium of Rajshahi Parjatan Motel in the divisional city.
The discussion on "Human rights condition and our roles" was organised by Human Rights Defenders Forum, Rajshahi chapter.
Sultana also urged the government to stop communal education in the name of teaching religion at schools to tackle the growing fanaticism in the country.
"We want a non-communal and universal education system, as Bangladesh was born out of a liberation war that took place on the basis of the ideology of non-communalism".
She also said human rights situation in Bangladesh is "far more away from good" due to corruption, political influence, and lack of self-awareness.
"The state behaves as weak when it is about preserving rights of citizens and turns strong like monsters when it is about breaking rights of the citizens."
Sultana called upon the law enforcers to treat carefully the citizens of an independent nation and reminded them of their answerability to people, courts, and global community.
Ain O Shalish Kendra director Noor Khan Liton, among others, addressed the discussion moderated by Barendra Unnayan Prochesta executive director Fayezullah Chowdhury.
