9 killed in boat capsize, storm
Nine people, including three children, were killed as a storm lashed Islampur and Dewanganj upazilas in Jamalpur on Monday evening.
Of them, six drowned after a boat capsized in Jamuna river while the children died as trees fell on their houses during the storm.
A large number of dwellings and boro crops on vast tracts of land were destroyed and innumerable trees uprooted as the storm swept through the upazilas, sources at local agriculture office said.
Those drowned were identified as boatman Fazal Haque, labourers Fakir Ali, 22, Tofael Hossain, 30, Siddique, 30, Jabil Haque, 35, of village Halkerchar of Dewanganj; and Mukhlesur Rahman, 12, of village Munniarchar of Islampur.
“The authorities recovered the bodies from Kulkandi hard point of Jamuna in Islampur,” said Monirul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer of Islampur, yesterday.
The deceased children were identified as Feroz, 3, son of Alam of Belgachha village, Monowara, 14, daughter of Salimuddin of the same village, and Zerin, 14, daughter of Jasijol Haque of Shashariabari village of Islampur upazila.
District Education Office sources said several schools including Boliadaha High School, Dewanpara Girls' Dakhil Madrasa, Bahadurpur Dakhil Madrasa, Kachihara Junior School, Belgachha High School and College, Shashariabari Dakhil Madrasa, Bamna Junior School were damaged in the storm.
The district administration gave each victim's family Tk 10,000 and allocated 10 tonnes of rice for the affected families in Islampura and 5 tonnes of rice in Dewanganj and Bakshiganj upazilas.
Senior officials of local administration visited the affected areas yesterday.
