Govt trying to check price hike

Commerce Minister Faruk Khan here yesterday said the government is trying to contain price hike of essentials with better management. "Prices of rice, fine-flour, sugar, and edible oil have increased slightly. But we didn't keep eyes close," he said. "The government is trying to check the rising trend in price of essentials through improved management." Faruk Khan was speaking as the chief guest at a function of Sherpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry held at the district Shilpakala Academy. Chamber president Golam Mohammad Kibria chaired the function. Khan also said 1,500MW electricity has been added to the national grid in the last two years and assured, "There shall be no load shedding by 2014." "New power plants including coal-fired ones are being set up. Talks with neighbouring India and Nepal are going on to establish power plants," he said. The minister announced Tk 50 lakh donation for Sherpur Chamber for the construction of its own building. He also pledged to manage land for the chamber building and graduate the chamber to grade-A from the existing grade-B.
