Non-communicable diseases spreading fast

Non-communicable diseases are spreading fast in the country, though the prevalence of communicable diseases is declining gradually. This information was revealed in a workshop on Bangladesh's preparation for the forthcoming UN Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Summit 2011 at the National Press Club in the city yesterday. The conference will be held on September 11 at the headquarters of the United Nations. Organised by the Department of Health and the Health Ministry, Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque attended the function as the chief guest. Health Secretary Mohammad Humayun Kabir was present as the special guest. The health minister said the grand alliance government is working relentlessly for the development of the health sector. The government is trying to ensure free health services for the poor, insolvent and helpless people, including those in rural areas, he added. He said the government has reached health care to doorsteps of the people by introducing community clinics across the country. The health minister said the government is continuing its efforts to reorganise the health sector to improve quality of health services. He stressed the need for creating public awareness for prevention of non-communicable disease. Health Department Director General Prof Dr Khandaker M Sefayet Ullah presided over the function while the department's Arsenic and NCD Programme Deputy Programme Manager Dr AKM Jafar Ullah presented a keynote paper. World Health Organisation (WHO) NCD Programme Officer Dr M Mosfata Zaman spoke on the occasion.
