Ershad demands presidential system

Unb, Dhaka
Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad yesterday demanded restoration of presidential system by amending the Constitution replacing the present parliamentary form of government in the country. “If the presidential system is restored, a balance will be in place between the president and the parliament, which will help to resolve problems of the people,” he said at a meeting at his Banani party office. JP presidium member Kazi Zafar Ahmed, secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howladar, and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister GM Quader, among others, also spoke at the meeting where over 200 activists of different political parties from Bagerhat joined the Jatiya Prty. Ershad said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had introduced the presidential form after the independence. “We should follow the path of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.” He observed that considering the present perspective, the presidential form of government will be better than the parliamentary democracy to govern the country effectively. Former Army general Ershad who ruled the country for nearly nine years as President urged the government to arrange referendum for reintroduction of the presidential system.
