The Department of Environment (DoE) fined a brick-field owner Tk 5 lakh and shut it down for causing massive environmental degradation at Panipara village in Kalia upazila yesterday. A DoE enforcement team led by its Director Mohammad Munir Chowdhury shut Prime Brick Field and penalised the owner Sheikh Abdul Mannan. It also seized 40,000 pieces of brick and destroyed around one lakh raw bricks. Munir Chowdhury said it was running without environmental clearance for the last few months. According to law, nobody can set up a brick kiln within four kilometres of residential area and on croplands. But the brick kiln is located within human habitation and near the crop field, a DoE source said.
