Zia did not fight in frontline: Amu

Staff Correspondent
Senior Awami League (AL) leader Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said there is no proof that Ziaur Rahman participated in any confrontational war though he was a sector commander during the War of Liberation. Amu, member of advisory council of AL, said this at a discussion marking Mujibnagar Day, the day the government in exile was formed in 1971, organised by Bangabandhu Shanskritik Jote at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the city. Expressing doubts whether Zia was a real freedom fighter, he said Zia went to offload arms from Swat ship on March 24 in 1971, which he knew would be used against Bangalees. How did he become a real freedom fighter within two days, he said.
