Set up int'l regime under UN: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday underscored the need for establishing an international regime under the United Nations to address cross-border migration and internal displacement being caused due to impact of climate change. The prime minister came up with the view when the visiting Director General of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing paid a courtesy call on her at her official Gono Bhaban residence in the morning. Though Bangladesh contributes a little to the climate change, it has to face various serious problems, including huge human displacement, she told the IOM director general. “We want an international regime under the UN to address the climate change induced migration situation,” she said. The PM and the IOM DG discussed various other issues, including international migration situation, IOM's assistance to Bangladesh in drafting the anti-trafficking law to ensure safety of women, children and labour, Press Secretary to Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad told journalists. They also had discussion on the 4th Colombo Process Ministerial Meeting beginning in the city today. The PM thanked IOM for providing assistance during the Lebanon crisis, first Gulf War and the extension of support to Bangladesh now for arranging return of 27,000 Bangladeshis, out of 35,000, from Libya.
