Contraband liquor worth Tk 70 lakh seized in Ctg
Intelligence department of Chittagong Customs seized one container loaded with illegally imported items, including contraband liquor worth Tk 70 lakh, at Chittagong port in the port city yesterday.
The seized items include 10,332 bottles of contraband liquor of 12 different foreign brands and 25 cartons of plain cards.
A five-member investigation team led by Shamsul Islam, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Customs (Import), recovered the items from a container at the jetty yard No-9.
One SS Enterprise located at 115, Lalkhanbazar in the port city imported the container from Saudi Arabia in November last year in the name of importing agricultural power tiller equipment.
Anjuman Traders, a local C & F (Clearing and Forwarding) agent of the importer, submitted a bill of entry against the consignment on November 9 last year.
Omar Faruq, superintendent of Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) department of Chittagong Customs (Import), said the consignment was considered as 'suspected one' and thus the importer was asked to get delivery of it through physical examination.
But the importer did not response in last four months even after the customs authority sent letters to both the importer and C&F agent for several times, he said.
He said action would be taken against the importer company as per Customs Act in this connection.
