Road crashes kill 4

Four people were killed and 17 others injured in seperate road accidents in Jhenidah and Savar yesterday. Our Jhenidah correspondent reports: Locals blocked the Jhenidah-Jessore highway for two hours yesterday after two local leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were killed in a road accident in Sadar upazila. The deceased are Mosabber Hossain, 35, ex-VP of Jhenidah KC College and Jamaat general secretary of ward No- 5 unit, and Sirajul Islam, 61, cashier and rokon (full-member) of the same unit. Police said the accident took place when a Jessore-bound sand-laden truck hit them at about 6:30am while they were standing beside the road near a truck terminal in the town. They were rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where Mosabber and Sirajul succumbed to their injuries. Two Jamaat men Mijanur Rahman, president of the ward No-5, and activist Tajul Islam, were also injured during the accident. They were admitted to the same hospital. Soon after the incident, Jamaat leaders and activists, along with local people, put barricade on the highway, halting vehicular movement. Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. UNB from Savar adds: Two people were killed and at least 15 others injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch on Dhaka- Aricha highway near Bathuli bus stand at Dhamrai yesterday. One of the deceased was identified as Mofiz Mia, 44, helper of the bus, but the identity of the other deceased was not available immediately.
