A total of 103 students of Ananda Schools, run by Reaching Out-of-School Children (ROSC), were awarded scholarships yesterday for their outstanding achievements in Primary Terminal Examinations 2010. The students were conferred the award at a reception organised by ROSC in association with World Bank (WB) at LGED Bhaban in the city attended by teachers and ROSC community members. The government with the support of WB is implementing ROSC project to bring underprivileged children, who never attended a regular school or had been forced to drop out, back to school. More than 37,000, disadvantaged students of Ananda Schools have passed the terminal examination at grade V last year. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Primary and Mass Education Minster Afsarul Ameen said it is a great achievement that students of a non-formal category did well in the examination after competing with students of the mainstream. He also said the number of students in both general and Ananda schools increased this year, which is a good sign. "Today's event recognises the success of this effort," he said. State Minister for the ministry Motahar Hossain and WB Bangladesh Country Director Ellen Goldstein also spoke. ROSC provides second chance education to more than 750,000 children in 22,000 Ananda Schools (Learning Centers). The project covers upazilas with high rates of poverty and low enrolment rates.
