Jute workers stop agitation till Jan 15
Laid off workers of Alim Jute Mills and casual workers of five other mills in Khulna-Jessore industrial belt postponed their today's rail-road barricade programme till January 15 following an assurance by the district administration of payment of their arrears.
The decision was taken in a meeting with workers' leaders held at Khulna Deputy Commissioner's office.
Presided over by the Deputy Commissioner SM Feroze Alam, the meeting was attended by high officials of joint forces, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), Khulna Metropoliton Police, project directors of six jute mills and CBA leaders.
Earlier on Sunday night, KMP Commissioner held a separate meeting with CBA leaders at Khan Jahan Ali police station and discussed the situation in the industrial belt.
The CBA leaders of six jute mills later issued a joint press statement at 11:30 pm Sunday postponing their programmes which included road-rail barricade and 'self immolation' by 333 workers of Crescent Jute Mills who quit their jobs under Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
