Charge against 260 read out

Charges against 260 more accused in Pilkhana carnage case were read out at a makeshift court in the capital yesterday. On April 12, charges against 80 out of 850 accused, including 23 civilians, were read out in the case. The second day's charge hearing began around 9:45am at the makeshift court in Bakshi Bazar and continued till 2:00pm with a 20-minute break. Prosecutor Mosharrf Hossain read out the charge of the accused individually. Sweeper Rashed Ali dragged the wife of Lt Col Jayedul Islam and tortured her physically said Mosharrf during the hearing. Many accused, including civilians, were charged for keeping valuables, including ornaments, money and mobile sets of army officers. Wife of Sepoy Akhtar Hossain and one of the accused of the case Rahima Begum was charged for keeping three mobile sets of three slain army officers, including the then director general. Prosecutor pleaded the court to take her guilt in cognisance. The court adjourned the trial proceedings till May 9. Last year, in July the CID pressed charges against 824 jawans and 23 civilians for murder, arson, looting, hiding of bodies and sedition. Of the 850 accused, two are dead and 21 others have been absconding. At least 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the February 25-26 carnage in 2009 at the Pilkhana headquarters of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), earlier called BDR.
