The first-ever national Physics Olympiad of the country will be held at Oxford International School (OIS) in the city today. Over 300 students from around 40 schools and colleges across the country participate in the Olympiad jointly organised by OIS and The Daily Star. The Olympiad aims at bringing out the students' hidden talents in physics, said OIS Principal GM Nizam Uddin to a press conference at the school yesterday. The competition will also provide them a platform from where they can develop the science education of the country, he added. Nizam said western countries have achieved remarkable developments for their practice of and expertise in science. In Bangladesh, similar strides for practice of science should start from the grass-roots level such as in schools, he stressed. Earlier, Mahamodul Haque, a teacher of the school, made a power-point presentation on the Oxford-The Daily Star National Physics Olympiad 2011. Haque said participants, divided into high school and college groups, will have to answer a number of tricky and interesting questions on physics. Top 10 scorers will be awarded gold medals, six silver medals, and two bronze medals. The 10 gold medallists will be specially coached by Bangladesh Physical Society (BPS) President Prof Ali Asgar before they take part in the 42nd International Physics Olympiad to be held in Thailand this July. This is the first time Bangladesh will participate in International Physics Olympiad since its beginning in Warsaw, Poland in 1967. State Minister for Science and ICT, Yeafesh Osman, is expected to address the opening ceremony of the Olympiad as the chief guest today. M Shamsher Ali, president of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences; Prof M Kaykobad of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet); Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology; Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star; would attend the ceremony.
