Monira gets World's Children's Prize

Monira Rahman, executive director of Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF), has received the World's Children's Prize 2011 for her fearless struggle for the surviving acid victims. Monira was presented the award by 50 children from 15 countries and Swedish Queen Silvia at a ceremony at Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, Sweden yesterday. Also awarded the prize this year are Cecilia Flores-Oebanda of the Philippines and Murhabazi Namegabe of Congo, who worked to stop child trafficking and sex slavery. The prize money, which stands at $100,000 this year, is used to help some of the world's most vulnerable children to ensure better life for them. The World's Children's Prize founded in 2000 in Sweden is a unique educational programme for children, promoting a more humane world. Aung San Suu Kyi has been announced as the new patron of the World's Children's Prize. Other patrons include Nelson Mandela, Queen Silvia, and Graca Machel.
