Road crashes kill eight, injure 33

Eight people were killed and 33 others injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Brahmanbaria, Lalmonirhat, Satkhira and Chittagong yesterday. Our Tangail correspondent reports: Three people were killed and 28 others injured in an accident as a Tangail-bound bus collided head-on with a North Bengal-bound bus on Bangabandhu Bridge approach road in the district yesterday. The identity of the victims could not be known immediately. After the accident, vehicular movement remained suspended for one hour. Our Brahmanbaria correspondent adds: Driver of a tractor was crushed under the wheels of the tractor as he fell down from the running tractor in front of Mission Primary School in the district yesterday. The deceased was identified as Md Abdur Rauf, 35, of Lalpur village of Sadar upazila. Our Lalmonirhat correspondent says: A nine-year-old boy was crushed under the wheels of stone laden truck on Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway at Hazraniya of Kaliganj upazila yesterday. The deceased is Mirazul Islam, son of Mominul Islam of Hazraniya village of Kaliganj upazila. Protesting the accident agitating locals blockaded the highway for two hours. Our Satkhira correspondent adds: Two people were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in the district early yesterday. The deceased were identified as Harasit Mondal, 25, son of Jitendra Nath Mondal of village Chhoto Kupot in Shyamnagar upazila and Sujit Kumar Sardar, 48 son of Birendra Nath Sardar of village Shailpur in Kaliganj upazila. Police said Harasit Mondal was killed and another injured as his motorcycle lost control and hit a roadside tree on Shyamnagar-Noabeki road at Hawalkhali in Shyamnagar upazila. In another accident, Sujit Kumar was killed as a truck hit him while he was crossing road at Chowmuhini in Kaliganj upazila. Staff correspondent from Chittagong says: A four-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured as a truck hit a microbus at Chakaria in Cox's Bazar yesterday. The girl was identified as Nabiba, daughter of Monwar Hossain of Mirpur in Dhaka.
