BCL factional clashes prompt CU closure: 8 injured
Chittagong University (CU) closed on Sunday for 11 days following a series of clashes between rival factions of CU's Bangladesh Chhatra League unit on Friday and Saturday, leaving at least eight severely injured.
The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting on Sunday afternoon, said syndicate member AKM Tafzal Haque, associate professor of management studies department.
However dormitories will remain open and administrative activities will continue, he added.
Meanwhile, CU disciplinary committee on Sunday noon at a meeting expelled four more students for two years and declared them persona-non-grata in the campus for their involvement in the clashes, said assistant proctor Mohammad Sayedul Islam.
Those expelled are Anisul Hasan of political science; Ataul Mannan of English; Ariful Islam of marketing studies and international marketing; and Mithu of philosophy departments; all of 2008-2009 academic sessions.
The committee also issued show cause notice to 13 other students for their involvement and banned all CU shuttle train compartment-based groups, said Sayedul.
A four-member probe committee, formed with Prof Dr Monir Uddin of chemistry department as convener, was asked to submit a report within ten working days, added Sayedul.
Mentionable, of those injured on Friday and Saturday, Mehrab Hossain, a third year student of applied physics; Soumen Das, a second year student of international relations; Quazi Tanjim Hossain, a fourth year student of finance and banking; and Rifat Bin Sadique, a third year student of sociology; are undergoing treatment in Dhaka Orthopedic Hospital.
