Limon gets bail
A Jhalakathi court yesterday granted bail to Limon, the college student maimed by Rab shooting, in a case filed for obstructing law-enforcers from discharging their duties and using arms against them.
Magistrate Nusrat Jahan of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court granted the bail against a security bond of Tk 10,000 following a petition by Limon’s counsel Nasimul Hasan.
The court also ordered the petitioner to appear before it on May 29 for further hearing. Police are yet to submit the charge sheet of the case.
Sixteen-year-old Limon, who is undergoing treatment at capital’s Pangu hospital, was shown arrested in two cases -- one for “obstructing law-enforcers from discharging their duties and attempting to murder” and the other for “possessing firearms”.
Lutfor Rahman, deputy additional director of Rapid Action Battalion-8, filed the cases with Rajapur Police Station on March 23.
Earlier that day, a Rab team led by Lutfor shot Limon in the left leg on his way to bring back his cattle home at Chhaturia village of Jhalakathi. The leg had to be amputated later.
On April 24, Rajapur police pressed charges against him and seven others in the arms case.
Contrary to the Rab chief’s admission that Limon is not a criminal, the charge sheet described him as a criminal “arrested with arms and ammunition”.
On April 11, Rab Director General Mokhlesur Rahman at a press briefing said Limon was a victim of a “shootout”.
Although a Rab press release put his age at 25, police investigation found him to be 16.
The family members said the teenage boy used to work at a kiln to pay for the educational expenses of his two siblings as well as his own.
Meantime, police have yet to take any action against the six Rab personnel accused in a case for shooting Limon. His mother Heno Ara Begum filed the case with a Jhalakathi court on April 26.
As per the Public Service Act 1985, the accused Rab personnel will be suspended and handed over to police should their bail petitions get rejected in a court, Lt Col Manirul Huq, commanding officer of Rab-8, told The Daily Star.
