UGC okays 11 more private universities

Tells president to activate 'accreditation council'

The University Grants Commission emphasised the need for forming and activating 'Accreditation Council', incorporated in the Private University Act to ensure quality of higher education. Outgoing UGC Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam paid a courtesy call on President Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban yesterday and apprised him of the UGC's recommendations. Prof Nazrul said if the accreditation council is formed and activated the quality of higher education will be increased. He apprised the president that there are 7000 senior teachers in the public universities and the universities need 7000 more experienced teachers. Emphasising implementation of the national education policy 2010, he told the president that the UGC has approved applications to set up 11 more new private universities scrutinising 42 applications.
