At least 40 persons were injured, including five policemen, as activists of Islami Shashontantra Andolan (ISA) clashed with labourers and madrasa students with transport workers in Sylhet on Sunday following May Day programmes. Witnesses said hundreds of activists of ISA brought out a procession around 10:00pm and vandalised a dais at Court Point in the city and were locked in a clash with the labourers, who were setting up the dais, leaving 20 people injured. Police charged truncheons and fired gunshots to bring the situation under control. They also detained two activists of ISA and seized some posters from the spot. Sammilita Sanskritik Jote organised the programme to observe the May Day. In another incident, the students of Yakubia Sunnia Madrasha asked the members of Truck Labourers Association to stop a programme organised by them at Sobhanighat following the May Day. Twenty people, including five policemen, were injured as at one stage a clash between the students and transport workers erupted, said Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police. On information, police rushed to the spot and charged baton and dispersed them. They also fired four gunshots during the clash. Then the truck labourers barricaded the main road for an hour protesting the incident. They withdrew the block after police assured them of taking action.
