Speakers at Tala workshop urge govt
Speakers at a workshop here yesterday urged the government to prepare a comprehensive programme to boost sweet water lobster (golda) cultivation in costal areas to protect environment while promoting the export sector.
Lobster cultivation in a planned way can increase the total yield by at least five times, which will create numerous jobs also for women, they said.
Shrimp cultivation is now destroying the environment, bio-diversity and creating ecological imbalance in south-western coastal region, they said. It also destroys fertility of agricultural lands.
There is no alternative to cultivation of lobster to protect the bio-diversity as shrimp cultivation is ecologically suicidal and economically unjust , they said.
The workshop held at Tala upazila was organised by a local NGO-- Women Job Creation Center-- run by women. Its coordinator Ashrafunnahar Asha was in the chair.
Tala upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) Md. Waliullah was the chief. Prof Dr Khondakar Anisul Haque and Prof Dr. Saifuddin Saleh of fisheries department at Khulna University were the main speakers.
Prof. Saleh said golda can be cultivated in sweet water throughout the country if farmers are trained.
The NGO has so far trained about 500 in sweet water lobster cultivation, its officials told this correspondent.
