Huji leader Farid involved in Aug 21 attacks
IO says at court
An investigation officer (IO) of 21 August grenade attack case yesterday told a Dhaka court that Harkatul Jihad (Huji) leader Maulana Sheikh Farid was directly involved with the grisly attack on an Awami League rally in 2004.
CID's Special Superintendent of Police Abdul Kahar Akond, also IO of the case, said this after producing the leader before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury for a seven-day fresh remand prayer.
Farid was produced before the court on completion of his seven-day remand, granted on April 28.
In the remand prayer, the IO said Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan in a confessional statement given earlier said Farid played an active role in executing the attack.
Moreover, he will be cross-examined with another Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan Sabbir, now on remand in the case filed for bomb blasts on a rally of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) at Paltan Maidan on January 20, 2001.
So, he needs to be remanded to find out whereabouts of several other fugitives responsible for the attacks, the IO said.
The court granted a four-day remand for further investigation.
Farid, also known as Shawkat Osman, was arrested in Tongi Railway Station area on April 26 in the case filed for the attack on the CPB rally.
