Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) here yesterday demanded a new constitution for the country, saying the existing constitution does not carry the spirit of the liberation war. JSD leaders said they have made a proposed constitution and already submitted it to the constitutional amendment committee. Allama Md Ikbal, president of JSD Chittagong city unit said JSD leaders think the present constitution does not reflect the actual spirit of the liberation war. So they demand a new constitution, he added. Ferdous Chowdhury, a leader of JSD Chittagong city unit, said the spirit of the liberation war was to establish an independent country free of exploitation. The existing parliament does not represent the working class and other professional groups who make up the majority of the population, he added. "That's why we proposed two hundred more seats for the representatives of different professional groups." Allama Ikbal said national unity has not been established, as the constitution carries some weaknesses and limitations. He proposed that the country should be divided into nine provinces, and the parliament should be constituted of two houses. Ikbal read out a written statement at a press conference yesterday to disclose JSD's proposals on constitutional amendment. JSD Chittagong city (north and south district units) jointly organised the conference at a restaurant in the port city ahead of the party's public meeting slapped for May 11. JSD central leaders including its President ASM Abdur Rab would attend the meeting to be held at Laldighi Maidan of the port city. At the news conference, Allama Ikbal also stressed that the local government administration be free from the interference of the ministers and government high officials. JSD central organising secretary Dr Jabiul Alam, Mostafa Kamal, Khorshed Alam, and Sarwar Hossain were also present, among others, on the occasion.
