Burn, plastic surgery units at all medical colleges on cards

Staff Correspondent
The government will set up burn and plastic surgery units at all medical college hospitals in the country, said Health Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque yesterday. Addressing as the chief guest the inaugural session of a conference on plastic surgery, Haque also called on the plastic surgeons of the country to help the government to this end. The minister said the first goal of the government is to provide minimum surgical facilities at the district level hospitals. Currently Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has a 50-bed burn and plastic surgery unit and Chittagong Medical College Hospital has a 20-bed one. Some 150 to 350 patients receive service from the DMCH burn unit. Haque said the population size of the country is very large, but it is hard for poor people to come to Dhaka for surgeries. So we have initiated providing some basic necessary tools and equipment demanded by the doctors of the district level hospitals, he added. The three-day conference that began at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel yesterday will be participated by plastic surgeons of the country and 12 experts from Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, and Britain. Society of Plastic Surgeons of Bangladesh (SPSB) organised this second annual conference on plastic surgery and cleft and craniofacial workshop. Khandaker Md Shefayetullah, director general of Health Services, said the demand of plastic surgeons in the country is high, but there were not enough posts for them. The finance ministry yesterday [Monday] approved 98 posts for plastic surgeons in the health sector of the country, he said. SPSB president Prof Shafquat Hussain Khundkar said plastic surgeons' contribution can be understood only by the patients who received service from them. DMCH burn unit was established long ago, but unfortunately it has not progressed despite its enormous service to people at different times, he said. Dr Murad Hassan, member of the parliamentary standing committee on health ministry, and Dr Samanta Lal Sen, vice-president of SPSB, also spoke on the occasion.
