Chittagong University (CU) authorities yesterday started erasing all names given to the compartments of the two shuttle trains that make seven trips between the port city and the university everyday. "We started rubbing out the names of the compartment-based groups written in and outside of the carriage to stop the activities of the groups from today (Wednesday)," said Dr Mohammad Akter Hossain, acting proctor. Inspirational quotations, upon deletion of the names, will be written there, he said. CU unit activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) split into about 20 factions, formed on the basis of 18 compartments of the two shuttle trains, and gave title to the carriages. Some titles are Choose Friends with Care (CFC), Varsity X-press (VX), Cockpit, Ulka, Always, 69, Fatafati, Blackhole, Orion, Fire, and Khaitta Kha. Over the fractionalisation, a string of clashes erupted on April 29-30 on the campus between the compartment-based factions, leaving a number of students injured. CU authorities, following the incident, announced closure of the university till May 12 and banned all activities of BCL compartment-based groups in the trains.
