Robber to die, 2 others get 31 years RI

A robber was sentenced to death and two of his accomplices awarded 31 years' rigorous imprisonment yesterday for killing a lawyer in 2009. Judge Mohammad Rezaul Islam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts at packed courtroom. The convict with death is Moahammad Chand Miah while Mohammad Sohel and Shamsul Haque alias Maji were given 31 years' rigorous imprisonment for killing Advocate Shamsul Haque Rintu. Rintu, a lawyer of Dhaka Judge's Court, was killed by a gang of robbers at his residence in the city's Jatrabari area on December 27, 2009. During the judgment, victim's father, mother and wife were present at the court and expressed their satisfaction over it. Earlier, the prosecution and defence had completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 13 prosecution witnesses. According to the prosecution, a gang of robbers led by Chand Miah entered the victim's house. Rintu caught hold of one of the robbers Chand Miah while the other members of the gang stabbed the victim indiscriminately, leaving him dead on the spot. Victim's wife Advocate Aklima Khatun filed a case against Chand Miah and two others. Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahman pressed charges against the three on April 12 last year. During the investigation, Chand Miah gave a confessional statement before a magistrate admitting his guilt and disclosed names of his accomplices. Special Public Prosecutor SM Rafiqul Islam stood on behalf of the state while Advocate Setara Begum appeared for the accused.
